Airsoft Weapons 101

Airsoft is an exciting sport that can take the form of military simulation, war reenactments, or any scenario a player's imagination can conjure. The weapons used in the sport of Airsoft are as diverse as its players, ranging from simple spring-action models to the more complex electric and gas-powered varieties. Most Airsoft guns are designed to mimic actual firearms. The feel of the hand grip, the look of the magazine and in some cases the firing action are realistic replicas of the real weapon. However, the complexity and the genuine look of each weapon are contingent on the player's budget.

The most inexpensive and most readily available Airsoft weapons are the spring-action models. These models are usually single-shot handgun replicas that require the player to cock a spring back before firing each round. These weapons are only accurate enough to be used for short range shooting and are not practical for Airsoft competitions and simulations. The advantage of the spring-loader is that its simplistic design makes it unlikely to malfunction, even in extreme cold and wet weather. While many spring-action styles have the look of real firearms, they are considered beginner models.

Gas powered Airsoft guns are more expensive then the spring-action gun but they are the more powerful alternative. These guns use pressurized gas such as CO2 and propane to fire the ammunition. Gas power offers the capability of both semi-automatic and automatic firing and they tend to be more realistic in their look. The gas powered Airsoft also tends to be available in small handgun replicas, with many offering a blowback feature that more closely mirrors the authentic firearm operation. Gas powered weapons are increasingly harder to find now that electric Airsoft weapons are becoming more popular.

While the electric selection of Airsoft tends to be more expensive, they are available in abundance. They feature a variety of firing capabilities including: automatic, three-round burst, and semi-automatic action. The electric Airsoft models range from handgun styles to assault weapon replicas. They offer greater velocity and accuracy and are the most common models used in Airsoft competitions and simulations. Many are made out of metal and reinforced plastic to give them an authentic look and feel.

Airsoft is a sport that can be enjoyed on many different levels. As a beginner, an inexpensive spring-loader is a great investment for target shooting in the backyard, before moving on to a more expensive electric model for a military simulation in the woods.
